Call to reaffirm value of aeronautics industry

The Confederation of European Aerospace Societies has reviewed European strengths and weaknesses in aeronautics technology in a Position Paper entitled Aeronautical Research and Technology - A Strategic Imperative for Europe.

The paper calls for European governments to reaffirm the value of the aeronautics industry as a key industrial asset, restore investment in research and technology acquisition to a level more comparable, as a proportion of turnover, to that of the USA and improve co-ordination of R&T programmes within Europe.

The Society, as a founding member of the CEAS, supports the view that there should be an increase of at least 50 per cent in the total European investment in aeronautical R&T, but points out that for the UK, which lags well behind France and Germany in this respect, an appreciably greater increase is needed.
