Medway Galvanising protection for UK’s biggest Christmas tree

Article Type: Methods From: Anti-Corrosion Methods and Materials, Volume 56, Issue 3

Standing almost 28 m tall, and decorated with over 80,000 baubles and 100,000 lights, Britain’s biggest Christmas tree brought the spirit of the season to Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet, Ellesmere Port, with a little help from Medway Galvanising.

The massive tree was supported by metalwork produced by Aldershot-based specialist fabricator Hampshire Metalcraft (Figure 1), working to designs created by Springfield Decorations of Guildford, Surrey. All metalwork was galvanised at Medway’s plant in Sittingbourne, Kent, prior to delivery to Ellesmere Port.

According to Cliff Madgwick of Hampshire Metalcraft, the brief from the marketing department at Cheshire Oaks Ellesmere Port was straightforward: “They wanted their tree to be the biggest of its type in the UK and they wanted it made in Britain!”

The finished tree, as tall as seven double-decker buses, fulfilled that brief to the letter.

“We’ve always relied on Medway Galvanising for the treatment and delivery of our metalwork,” comments Cliff. “This time the design side took a little longer than anticipated, but when it came to getting the finished installation on site, Medway were right on schedule as usual.”

Hampshire Metalcraft has worked with Springfield Decorations for many years on prestigious projects such as London’s Oxford Street lights and the flagship John Lewis department store in London.
