Plascoat reports that the inside of fire extinguisher cylinders can now be powder coated in seconds using new rotational spray coating technology.

Supported in the design, development and manufacture of the turnkey lining systems by Gravatom Engineering Systems, Plascoat has combined a lance application approach similar to that used in themoset coating with new, finer formulations of its fire extinguisher lining materials such as PPA665.

"We are already supplying coating materials and spin coating equipment to around 70 per cent of the European market", explains Dave Wiltshire, manager of Plascoat's specialist tire extinguisher sector support team. "The new systems will meet the demands of higher volume water and foam filled extinguisher manufacturers who require the corrosion protection of an advanced powder coating."

While Plascoat's existing spin coater is capable of meeting the needs of companies with a throughput requirement of up to 30 cylinders an hour, the new technology is believed to push that figure up to 360 an hour.

As well as speeding up throughput, reducing factory floor space and manning requirements, there are further key benefits claimed with the new Plascoat rotational spray lining systems. The computer-controlled systems are able to identify for themselves the presence of cylinders and set up the appropriate application routines automatically, also providing the facility for localised extra coating cover of areas such as welds.
