New from Enfield-based manufacturer TEC Electrical Components is a range of MIL-C-38999 Series III circular connectors made from a composite material that claims a much greater resistance to corrosive environments than standard materials such as aluminium alloy or even stainless steel.

Achieving a reportedly salt-spray resistance in excess of 2,000 hours compared with 500 hours for standard parts the new connectors are believed to be ideal for seaborne and petrochemical applications, while their light weight also makes them suitable for applications in avionics and portable equipment.

The material used for the connector shell and nuts is a composite of glass and a high-performance aromatic polymer, which is not only inert to all known fluids and chemicals but also delivers a maximum continuous temperature rating of 200°C. Fluorosilicone rubber is used for the platform inserts, and contacts are made from gold-plated copper alloy.

Available with up to 128 high-density contacts in nine different shell sizes, the new connectors feature a quick-release triple-start coarse-ribbed threaded coupling nut incorporating an anti-vibration mechanism, together with 100 per cent scoop-proof contact protection. Durability is stated to be three times that of standard MIL-C-38999 Series III connectors,
