High corrosion resistance with Chemetall's Finigard range

High corrosion resistance with Chemetall's Finigard range

Keywords Chemetall, Corrosion resistant, Zinc

For the highest corrosion resistance on zinc plating, Chemetall claim to have the ideal product range with their state-of-the-art Finigard 200 and Finigard 400 processes.

Finigard 200 is a corrosion resistant conversion coating for use on zinc plated articles. It may also be used on a wide variety of surfaces to enhance corrosion resistance and it is possible to obtain more than 500 hours salt spray resistance to red rust when used over chromated zinc plated articles.

Additional benefits of Finigard 200 are said to be that it:

  • is extremely economical;

  • can be applied to parts from most existing plating operations;

  • requires no added costly equipment;

  • can be applied over many metals;

  • has no additional problems in effluent treatment.

Finigard 401 reportedly gives even higher corrosion resistance with an organo-mineral topcoat and has been developed in response to the demanding specifications on zinc plating set by the automotive industry. Over a 10µm zinc deposit, results after thermal shock of one hour at 120°C and salt spray testing are:

  • up to 300 hours with no white rust;

  • up to 750 hours with no red rust.

The protective properties of the Finigard 401 film are said to be unchanged by repeated thermal ageing and superficial mechanical strain, such as knocks, thread tightening, rubbing, scratches, etc, and even a scratch down to the underlying zinc will not necessarily result in the premature appearance of white rust.

Finigard 401 claims to meet the stringent requirements of the automotive industry, such as:

  • ductility  no cracking or folding;

  • excellent control of the co-efficient of friction;

  • absence of tearing after drying.
