Shopping trolleys are being given a new lease of life and a major retailing cost slashed through the use of Plascoat's highly versatile and durable PPA571(ES) Performance Polymer Alloy coating material in a new refurbishment process.

French trade coater Evron Peintures Industrielles (EPI), based at Evron in Brittany, has been pioneering the refurbishment of carts originally produced using galvanised and varnished wirework.

The new process involves the shot blasting of the metal and the electrostatic spray coating of PPA571 (ES) in colours often selected to suit the corporate style of the store chain. The cost of refurbishing the trolleys previously simply scrapped is only around a third of the price of new carts.

Thermoset spraying had been tried as a method of restoring the trolleys, but was rejected by EPI because of the scratched appearance of the surface after a comparatively short period. Nylon was similarly rejected because of relatively poor impact resistance.

The thick film PPA571 (ES) coating is applied directly on to cleaned steel without the need for a primer and required no modifications to EPI's existing spray coating line. The coating benefits include excellent corrosion protection, long term adhesion, quality appearance and a high level of resistance to scratching, impact damage and UV rays.

The French move follows the decision of Heartbeat, manufacturer of the most comprehensive range of retail display equipment in the UK, to standardise on PPA571 (ES) for around a dozen display systems, including its large stacking baskets. There the switch was away from polyethylene.
