Vale Anthony Hopwood: 1944-2010

Article Type: Obituary From: Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, Volume 23, Issue 6

It is with a profound sense of loss and sadness that we record the passing of Professor Anthony Hopwood, founding editor of the journal Accounting Organizations & Society and former Dean of the Said Business School at the University of Oxford. Anthony pioneered our interdisciplinary accounting research community and set in place many of the important founding structures and processes that have built that community into the important intellectual force that it is today. He has touched many of us in the course of our academic and research work over the past quarter of a century. So many of us have had the privilege of sharing important personal moments and exchanges with him. For instance, Anthony encouraged the Social Accounting Newsletter in Australia and then internationally in the late 1970s. From these early beginnings Accounting Auditing & Accountability Journal emerged as a journal in the late 1980s. When he returned from the USA to the UK university sector in the 1970s, Anthony brought with him an evident energy for innovation and change in accounting and a clear sense of mission. His fulfilment of that mission is now a matter of established and universally acknowledged record. Anthony has been a pivotal influence upon our discipline. His death is a sad and poignant moment in our community’s history. Nevertheless, his legacy is enormous, and we all stand as his beneficiaries.
