Panasonic have introduced their AF1 series of Dip Pulse MIG welders that feature artificial intelligence to provide low spatter, high deposition rates, clean bead appearance and highly flexible levels of penetration (see Plate 1).

Panasonic's YD-350AFI and YD-500AFI Artificially Intelligent (AI) Constant Voltage Dip Pulse Control MIG Welders are ideal for use with aluminium, stainless steel, mild steel and coated steel components and incorporate Soft, Hard and Hybrid pulse modes to address the widest possible variety of requirements.

Soft pulse mode delivers a wide and soft arc for shallow penetration and is especially suitable for butt welding of mild steel plates with thicknesses of 9mm or more. Hard pulse mode offers medium penetration levels and is suitable for manual welding, while Hybrid pulse mode provides a concentrated sharp arc for deep penetration with mild steel and stainless steel or shallow penetration, narrow bead welding with aluminium.

Featuring a front panel digital display for ease of use, the new systems utilise a high-speed processor operating at double the speed of previous units and an improved CDM (Current Detect Masking) method that provides extremely stable and rapid arc start for low to high-current welding applications. Initial current and voltage are user-configurable to ensure optimum penetration at arc start.
