Jaguar Cars has awarded Schenck Pegasus a £6.3 million contract to expand and upgrade its engine research and development facility at Whitley in Coventry. The investment reflects Jaguar's commitment to future engine design and will result in one of the most advanced engine test facilities in Europe.

Schenck Pegasus is supplying six complete durability test cells for endurance testing based around Schenck 330kW eddy-current dynamometers along with four dynamic engine test cells using new Schenck 280kW asynchronous dynamometers. These Dynas2 machines are designed for advanced engine testing with fast torque rise times and acceleration rates. In addition, each of the dynamic test cells will be capable of operating at temperatures down to -30úC for cold starts and low temperature emissions testing.

All of the new test cells will be equipped with Schenck X-one automation and monitoring systems. The X-one systems will allow Jaguar to simulate complete driver, vehicle and road cycles for examining the entire spectrum of engine performance parameters and emissions characteristics. A graphical user interface facilitates simple test programming and real-time, process visualisation.

The new test cells will be installed over the next 18 months in a purpose built extension to Jaguar's existing Whitley R&D facility that already houses 24 engine test cells supplied by Schenck in 1989.

Schenck Pegasus is the test and automation division of Carl Schenck AG. "We are delighted to have been awarded this important Jaguar contract which reinforces Schenck Pegasus' position at the forefront of engine test technology", commented Heinz Gerst, managing director of Banbury-based Schenck Ltd. "Jaguar has an enviable worldwide reputation for its engines and this further investment in research and development will ensure that it will stay ahead of the global competition."
