Abstract
Purpose/approach
On the occasion of the publication of the 20th volume of the Advances in Gender Research series, this chapter reviews the series goals and previous volumes and introduces the themes and chapters of the current one.
Research implications
The chapter shows both continuity and change in approaches to theories, research methods, pedagogy, and praxis in gender studies.
Practical/social implications
Newer approaches, gender-centered, intersectional and global, offer a critique of older ways of gathering and understanding data, ways that respond to and are impacted by social change.
Originality/value
The chapter and the volume are intended to encourage further advances in gender research.

Acknowledgment
We wish to thank the late Herbert M. Johnson, founder of JAI Press for creating the idea of an “Advances” series and shepherding us through our first four volumes. Volumes 5–11 were published under the JAI imprint by Elsevier. During that time, our series continued to grow and gained more international distribution. JAI became an Emerald imprint with our transition from Volume 12 in 2008. We are especially grateful for the support and encouragement of our commissioning editor Cristina Irving Turner ably assisted by Kimberley Chadwick and now welcome and look forward to working with Emma Stevenson. The production assistance we have received from Jayanambi (“Jay”) at MPS Ltd has been invaluable.
In preparing each of our volumes, we have sought input and advice from colleagues and contributors. In addition to guest-edited volumes, for volumes with special focuses we have had the good fortune to work directly with Jennie Jacobs Kronenfeld, Esther Ngan-ling Chow, and most recently, for Volume 19 with its emphasis on research underwritten by the ADVANCE program of the National Science Foundation (NSF), Catherine White Berheide. With the 20th volume, we inaugurate a formal advisory board composed of a diverse group of colleagues from the United States and abroad. The members are:
Miriam Adelman, Universidade Federal du Paraná, Brazil
Franca Bimbi, Universita Degli Studi di Padova, Italy
Max Greenberg, University of Southern California, USA
Marla H. Kohlman, Kenyon College, USA
Chika Shinohara, Momoyama Gakiun University (St. Andrews University), Japan
Tiffany Taylor, Kent State University, USA
