SNP’s woes in Scotland could prove to be short-term

Monday, July 1, 2024

Significance

John Swinney’s replacement of Humza Yousaf as Scottish National Party (SNP) leader and first minister has done little to bolster the party’s electoral prospects. Labour, which has been the main beneficiary of corruption allegations in the SNP, is on course to make significant gains in Scotland.

Impacts

  • Labour’s energy policies will likely deter investors in North Sea oil and gas exploration.
  • Support for Scottish independence has remained stable despite the SNP’s woes and will likely continue to do so.
  • Should Swinney not survive for long as SNP leader, Kate Forbes should be in a strong position to replace him.
