Chamisa’s exit heralds end for Zimbabwe’s CCC party
Monday, January 29, 2024
Significance
CCC has been embroiled in internal battles since October 2023, when little-known political activist Sengezo Tshabangu unilaterally appointed himself as secretary general and dismissed multiple MPs, something Chamisa and other party leaders have been powerless to prevent.
Impacts
- ZANU-PF is now almost certain to secure a two-thirds majority in parliament after by-elections scheduled for February.
- Any new opposition force will become an immediate target for government repression.
- Tshabangu is likely to declare himself CCC leader and consolidate his hold over the party.
