Pakistan will struggle to enforce migrants order

Significance

The order is aimed at Afghans especially. Pakistan blames them for much of the terrorism afflicting it and wants Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban to do more to curb the Pakistani Taliban Movement (TTP), a militant enemy of the Pakistani state that relies heavily on Afghan bases.

Impacts

• Border clashes between Pakistani and Afghan security personnel will probably intensify in the weeks ahead.
• Many of the unregistered Afghan migrants choosing to leave Pakistan may try to move to neighbouring Iran and possibly on to Europe.
• Any deportations of Afghans could increase recruitment into the TTP, as returnees would likely be angry and destitute.
