Morocco will chart a new stage for the car industry

Significance

The new projects include a venture launched in the United Kingdom at the end of May that aims to produce electric sports utility vehicles (SUVs) in Morocco. Earlier in May, King Mohammed VI witnessed the unveiling of a prototype ‘hydrogen utility vehicle’ developed by a Moroccan company with European partners.

Impacts

• EVs and other non-petroleum vehicles will enable Morocco to maintain export revenue growth from the automotive sector.
• Although the sector is capital-intensive, the entry of new car producers and associated feeder industries will generate job opportunities.
• The spread of EVs and hydrogen vehicles will require the development of charging and filling stations and the expansion of power generation.
