Yemen's Huthis will have little interest in compromise
Friday, July 7, 2023
Significance
It governs territory that is home to around 65-70% of the Yemeni population. With a coherent ideological programme, it has more control and unity than the Aden-based internationally recognised government.
Impacts
- The Huthis and associated governing entities will likely remain relatively strong and unified.
- Public dissatisfaction with circumstances in the north is unlikely to impact the government’s ability to exercise control.
- The Huthis could leverage disunity among southern forces to extend territorial control in the absence of a new ceasefire agreement.
