Jokowi will not consider staying in office beyond 2024

Friday, March 24, 2023

Significance

The General Elections Commission (KPU) is appealing the verdict. The next general election, which includes the contest to succeed President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo, is scheduled to take place on February 14, 2024. Jokowi must leave office next year because the constitution limits presidents to two five-year terms.

Impacts

  • Jokowi will continue to register high approval ratings until the end of his current term.
  • Any move to get Jokowi to stay in power beyond next year would prompt protests from various groups, despite his popularity.
  • Poll-related manoeuvrings will be a higher priority for the political elite than Indonesia’s chairmanship of ASEAN this year.
