Major Georgian port project revived

Thursday, February 16, 2023

Significance

Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili revealed in December that the government intended to build the Anaklia deep-water port, but without ADC involvement. After many false starts, the Georgian Dream party's government wants Anaklia to become its signature project, facilitated by strong economic performance.

Impacts

  • Central Asian states and China will welcome opportunities to increase exports through Georgian ports.
  • Russia needs Georgia as a transit route for sanctioned or at least grey imports and may not oppose Anaklia so vehemently.
  • As bilateral relations quietly thaw, Russia and Georgia may resume shipping between their Black Sea ports.
