Orthodox divisions may aggravate Ethiopia insecurity
Monday, January 30, 2023
Significance
In response, the Oromo archbishops on January 27 declared themselves the leaders of a new “Holy Synod of Oromia and other Nations and Nationalities”, and excommunicated twelve EOTC archbishops. The confrontation exposes festering tensions within the Church that could exacerbate domestic instability.
Impacts
- The federal and regional governments may seek to avoid taking a position, but may still be accused of favouritism, especially by the EOTC.
- The tensions may generate conflicts among Orthodox followers from different ethno-linguistic groups, especially in Oromia.
- Orthodox fears that some Protestants seek to weaken the EOTC may produce inter-religious tensions, particularly in Amhara.
- The tensions may further strain Oromo-Amhara relations, including within the ruling party.
