ASEAN will not be Indonesia’s top priority in 2023
Tuesday, December 20, 2022
Significance
Its three main goals for the G20 this year were to build a resilient global health architecture, use digital technologies to transform society and drive the transition to clean energy. President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo’s second and final five-year term will expire shortly after the 2024 general election.
Impacts
- East Timor will likely take a few more years to secure full membership of ASEAN even if a roadmap for this is agreed in 2023.
- Maritime tensions between Beijing and the South-east Asian claimants in the South China Sea will likely increase.
- Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto will be among the front runners to succeed Jokowi in 2024.
