Egypt’s National Dialogue is unlikely to bring reforms
Wednesday, September 28, 2022
Significance
Hundreds of politicians, academics, experts and public personalities will attend the conference-like event, which is meant to discuss national action to help Egypt transition into a “modern, democratic, civil state that accommodates all its citizens.” The resulting report will go directly to Sisi.
Impacts
- The internal balance of power will likely persist; the regime is well-entrenched and coherent.
- The dialogue will allow some moderate critics to air grievances.
- Egypt will do enough on human rights to allow the US administration to continue giving military aid.
