Polish president’s independence will be limited
Wednesday, August 24, 2022
Significance
Duda’s image has changed. Whereas only a year ago, the president did not deal with fundamental issues, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, he now appears as a politician of substance, open to talks with the opposition and playing a leading role in relations with the United States, Ukraine and European partners.
Impacts
- The president’s new strategy will probably help him retain the trust of a wider group of citizens.
- Opposition attempts to win over a larger share of the electorate may be hampered.
- Duda has cooperated with the opposition but is unlikely to attempt to ease polarisation on such issues as rule of law and EU relations.
