Russia's slimmed-down war aims still rule out peace

Wednesday, June 1, 2022

Significance

The decision comes as Russian forces enter parts of Severodonesk, a key objective in south-eastern Ukraine. Still, Russia has not gained enough ground to declare an end to its campaign. Ukraine is militarily capable and has little reason to accept the loss of territory.

Impacts

  • NATO and individual members will supply Ukraine with heavier weapons than before.
  • Russian officials have again ruled out nuclear attack; although this is unlikely, Moscow's pledges are often broken.
  • Belarus's president will try to stay out of the war while comprehending that his country too is under occupation.
