Significance

The first rounds of presidential elections are scheduled for November 22 for Burkina Faso and December 27 for Niger. Mali’s interim, hybrid civilian-military government is organising a transition that may involve first-round elections in late 2021 or early 2022, with a high likelihood of a runoff. Meanwhile, relative stability appears likely to continue in Mauritania and Chad despite presidential and parliamentary elections in the latter in 2020.
