Niger security will worsen amid regional turbulence

Thursday, September 10, 2020

Significance

Foremost among them are insecurity and regional instability: six French nationals and two Nigeriens were killed in an attack in Koure on August 9, while in neighbouring Mali a coup last month has added to the pressures.

Impacts

  • Movement restrictions in western Niger will complicate relief efforts for vulnerable populations.
  • Insecurity in Tillabery and elsewhere may prompt a delay of municipal elections, also scheduled for this year.
  • The date of the presidential elections will likely remain unchanged.
