Correa will be a major figure in Ecuador’s elections
Monday, September 7, 2020
Significance
Precluded from running for the top job after having already served two terms, Correa has been selected as the running mate of Andres Arauz, a relatively unknown 35-year-old, who is the presidential candidate for the Centro Democratico (Democratic Centre, CD). Correa’s ambitions, however, have been frustrated by criminal charges.
Impacts
- A second wave of COVID-19 cases could delay the elections, further stoking political tensions.
- Conflicts and controversies will arise as the electoral authorities approve the final candidates and coalitions.
- International creditors will follow campaigning closely as overseas debt and IMF relations will feature prominently.
