Balkans will manage migrants with little EU support
Thursday, January 23, 2020
Subject
The risk to Balkan security from irregular migration.
Significance
Last year’s 46% rise in migrant arrivals in the EU via Turkey has raised the pressure on the Western Balkans again. However, despite being relatively poor, these countries have survived those pressures and defied some West European concerns about imported radicalisation and terrorism.
Impacts
- Turkey is keen that the EU continue aid to refugees on its territory after the 2016 agreement expires.
- Overcrowding in migrant camps on some Greek islands is leading to unrest among both migrants and locals.
- Surveys suggest migration is no longer the top problem for many Europeans, especially for younger women.
