Egypt president will face more challenges to his rule

Thursday, October 3, 2019

Significance

The speaker of parliament, Ali Abdel-Aal, said that MPs “will never allow cabinet ministers and provincial governors to export problems to the president”. Egypt's parliament is under the control of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and the MPs’ comments come in the aftermath of rare protests on September 20, 21 and 27 in which calls for Sisi to step down were heard.

Impacts

  • Sisi still has the White House’s support, but this could change if a Democrat is elected the next US president.
  • Political risk concerns could affect inflows of investment and impair tourism, but as yet there has been little sign of this.
  • Many of Egypt’s key economic indicators are on an improving trend.
