US-Iran ties unlikely to warm in 2019

Tuesday, February 26, 2019

Significance

US-Iran ties have cooled under President Donald Trump. This month in Warsaw, US Vice-President Mike Pence described Iran as the "greatest threat" to Middle Eastern peace and security and criticised Washington's partners for not cooperating with the administration's sanctions regime and refusing to withdraw from the JCPOA.

Impacts

  • Iran's economy will suffer but not collapse, amid ongoing trade with China, EU states and India.
  • Zarif's resignation offer is unlikely immediately to trigger an Iranian withdrawal from the JCPOA.
  • Trump's administration might suddenly push to re-engage with Tehran as it has done with Pyongyang.
