Cybersecurity of aviation sector will improve slowly

Thursday, October 11, 2018

Subject

Aviation cybersecurity.

Significance

The aviation sector has significant experience tackling physical security risks, such as lasers shone into the cockpit or preventing dangerous items being taken aboard (especially since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks). Cybersecurity is proving a tougher challenge not only for corporate IT systems but also operational air traffic control and management systems. Meanwhile, it is becoming easier and cheaper for potential attackers to interfere with electronic systems.

Impacts

  • State-linked cyberattacks against critical infrastructure bode ill for aviation cybersecurity.
  • Commercial aviation regulation is fairly consistent globally; no region is particularly ahead or behind on safety rules.
  • Risks posed by malicious uses of artificially intelligent systems in aviation are largely an academic discussion at present.
