Poor ties with the Bedouin hinder Cairo's Sinai fight

Monday, August 14, 2017

Significance

Four members of the security forces were killed in separate attacks over the weekend. Despite a years-long campaign to dismantle the Sinai affiliate of Islamic State (IS), Wilayat Sinai retains the capability to plan and execute large attacks. Egypt’s inability adequately to address the Sinai militancy indicates failed counter-insurgency tactics.

Impacts

  • Wilayat Sinai could threaten the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) monitoring the peace treaty agreement between Egypt and Israel.
  • Although Wilayat Sinai will be focused on confronting Egyptian security forces in the Sinai, it will also present a threat to Israel.
  • The group’s adaptability and patience will make it a tough foe to eradicate.
