New Thai constitution promises constant political flux
Friday, April 10, 2015
Significance
To generate public support, the CDC this week circulated the draft's main provisions. Compared to Thailand's last two 'permanent' constitutions -- those of 1991 and 2007 -- the drafting of a new constitution is an ambitious undertaking, since it aims not only to rewire the domestic political system but also to narrow wider socio-economic disparities.
Impacts
- The new constitution could facilitate Thailand's participation in the TransPacific Partnership and the ASEAN Economic Community.
- Reintroduction of large-scale social programmes will result in chronic fiscal deficits, dampening investor confidence.
- Since Prayuth is keen to normalise Thailand's key foreign ties, he will avoid delaying elections beyond early 2016.
