Based on a true story
I once saw a white box hanging on a wall
So still and unassuming I had to stop and ponder
On its being and its color, about the obvious wonder
Thence ink its presence down by calling out its name
In passing short thereafter I saw the box again
A friend had called it otherwise, driving me to reconsider
I cannot see the box's insides; I know nothing of its sort
The box must thus be black for all I know and shudder
Occasionally I stop by; the box still hangs on the wall
Over its dignity I linger and account for it to pay homage
It is white and it is black but a black box's really orange
Then again orange is apparently the new and current black
All the while as I recount this succession of events
I realize bewildered it never once occurred to me
To contemplate the prospect, nor the possibility
That the box I write about might not even be a box
