About the Editor

Daniel Silander (Ed.) is an Associate Professor of Political Science and Research Leader of European Studies at Linnaeus University, Sweden and Extraordinary Professor at School of Government Studies, North-West University, South Africa. His main areas of interest are international security and democratization. He is also project leader of the Linnaeus Palme collaboration between Linnaeus University, Sweden and North-West University, South Africa.

About the Contributors

Staffan Andersson is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Linnaeus University, Sweden. His research interests concern the functioning of democracy, why institutions work well or badly, corruption and the integrity of public administration.

Helena Ekelund is a Senior Lecturer of Political Science at the Department of Political Science at Linnaeus University, Sweden. Her research interests are found in the intersection between EU politics and public administration with particular focus on agency governance at EU and national levels.

Pieter Heydenrych is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Government Studies at the Potchefstroom Campus, North-West University, South Africa. His main expertise is in the fields of participation in local government, democracy, and democratic theory.

Kgame Molope is a Lecturer in the School of Government Studies at the Mahikeng Campus, North-West University, South Africa. His background is in the area of Peace Studies with conducted research on conflict studies and international relations.

Martin Nilsson is a Senior Lecturer of Political Science at the Department of Political Science at Linnaeus University, Sweden. His main research areas are democratic institutions, challenges to transitions and consolidation of democracy.

Emma Ricknell is a Senior Lecturer of Political Science at the Department of Political Science at Linnaeus University, Sweden. Her main research areas are institutions, legislative politics, and representation and the role of media in politics.

Ilse Rieder is currently a PhD student in Political Studies at the Vaal Triangle campus of the North-West University, South Africa. Her research focuses on the deepening of democracy and power relations in democracies with particular focus on substantive political equality.

Charlotte Silander is a Senior Lecturer of Political Science at the Department of Political Science at Linnaeus University, Sweden. Her research focus is on gender equality in higher education, systems of higher education, and research policy. Her main empirical focus has been on the Nordic and EU states with comparative analysis on Australia, South Africa, and the United States.

Herman Van der Elst is an Associate Professor of Political Studies and International Relations at the School of Government Studies, Vaal Triangle Campus, North-West University, South Africa. His current research focus is on African politics and governance issues in South Africa.
