Abstract

Purpose

The author seeks to explain the assaults made recently on the democratic process in many parts of the world.

Design/methodology/approach

The democratic mechanism is broken into operational segments in order to identify the variety of dysfunctions or attacks involved.

Findings

Democracy, spreading geographically during the past century and a half, is suffering setbacks in diverse global regions. The author describes the phenomenon and its results.

Originality/value

As in chemistry, physics and mechanics, a process may be difficult to understand if observed only in part. In order to perceive the significance of the process, a holistic approach is a preferred strategy for comprehension.
