Article publication date: 1 September 2004
Abstract
This article looks at the retail industry's obligation to provide late opening hours, seven days a week and, in some instances, 24/7. Assesses the affects on employees’ working patterns, childcare issues and whether these obligations have a positive or negative effect on the business. Concludes that job‐share is a good way to retain experienced individuals, giving management cover throughout the year and allows the business to capitalise on the strengths and skills of two people.
