Abstract

Notes the challenges currently faced by the NHS and specifically the health goals outlined in Health of the Nation. Stresses the importance of national policy and strategy development as a means of recognizing the inter‐connectedness of services and policies. Cites a number of examples exemplifying the way in which a wide variety of agencies and organizations are related and impinge on health and health care. These examples include transport, child benefit and homelessness among others. Stresses the importance of stabilizing a system exposed to substantial and continuous change.
