Twenty-first century grazers

Twenty-first century grazers

A recent report from the catering industry researchers, Foodservice Intelligence, points to the fact that UK citizens are becoming a nation of grazers, eating snacks often and usually outside the home. In the UK today for every pound spent on food, 34p goes on meals eaten outside the home. Quick service restaurants take the biggest share of meals served (23.3 per cent) suggesting that the customers want to be served quickly and in a casual arena. Despite a fall in overall numbers of pubs, they still make the biggest section of the food service market (20.2 per cent) with hotels second (18.5 per cent) and education third at 13.1 per cent. Small hotels serve the most breakfasts at around 179 million meals a year. Not surprisingly the largest number of food service outlets are found to be in the south of the country (24.1 per cent). The reasons suggested for the increase in grazing include the increasing numbers of working women and the shortage of free time available.
