"Patent Strategy" provides an overview of the importance of patents, how to devise a patent strategy, and the legal complexities of patent applications and maintenance.

Chapter 1, Basic Intellectual Property Concepts, introduces the basic concepts of patent law and discusses the differences between copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets. Exclusivity – the desired goal of filing for a patent, what patents can't do, and licensing of patents, are amongst the topics addressed in chapter 2, The Value of Patents.

Developing a Strategy is discussed in chapter 3 and provides guidance for seeking professional help, and how to determine whether or not an invention is patentable. Chapter 4 addresses Researching With Intellectual Property in Mind, while chapter 5 discusses Infringement and Freedom to Operate. Subjects covered in this chapter include: types of infringement, avoiding patent infringement, and dealing with infringes.

Working With Attorneys, Agents, and Liaisons is addressed in chapter 6. Chapter 7, Disclosure and Filing Decisions, discusses topics including the filing decision, the cost of broadly filed patent applications, and techniques for determining which countries will be of value.

Modification of claims, research after the filing, maintaining cohesion, and issuance and maintenance of patents are amongst the subjects covered in chapter 8, After the Filing. Chapter 9, the final chapter of the book discusses the future of Intellectual Property Efforts.

This is a superbly written reference text that clearly presents the processes involved in applying for patents and developing a patent portfolio. The book's broad coverage and minimal use of legal jargon makes it essential reading for researchers and research managers, and suitable for students and technical professionals alike.
