A contract to supply a twin gun welding cell together with a full range of ancillary equipment comprising service panel and cable loom and support systems has recently been undertaken for Motoman Robotics, by Portable Welders, a company which operates at the very forefront of welding technology. The complete welding cell was built in Sweden by Motoman, and then installed at automotive manufacturer UYS Ltd based at Cowley (Plate 3).

For this contract Portable Welders designed and manufactured a special double C-type robot welding gun which is essentially two of their 'C' type guns operating back to back. The gun is being used by UYS Ltd to weld two different components, which are placed on a rotating table. One pair of electrode arms on the gun welds the first component. The gun is then rotated 180o on the robot and the second electrodes weld a different component.
The type of components being welded presented an ideal opportunity for the development by Portable Welders of a back to back welding gun. In addition, this type of design also meant that there was no need for a gun change system, which would have been considerably more expensive. The cell also utilises the weight carrying capacity of modern day robots with the robot specified for this project able to carry up to 150kg.
The double gun supplied isfrom Portable Welders' latest release of 'C' type robot equipment, which incorporates all the sophisticated features found on their previous guns, including powerful ISO transformers with inbuilt current sensing toroids. These ensure that the facilities of the welder are used to the full to give very accurate and precise control over the weld. The 'C' type guns also incorporate an equalising system with a linear slide to help minimise weld site damage.
This specially developed twin gun robot cell highlights Portable Welders ability to design a welding solution, which meets customers' requirements in the most cost effective manner possible.
