A pressure of 10kg is typically needed for stud welding, making it a core application for Comau's new SMART S4 articulated robot, which accepts a 15kg static payload on the wrist (see Plate 4). Other uses include handling and palletisation, loading and unloading machine tools, assembly, deburring and light machining. IP65 protection is provided to prevent ingress of water and dust to the working parts.

The six-axis robot fills a gap in this Italian robot manufacturer's range between the 8kg and 45kg capacity models. Reach extends to 2.2 metres from the ground and 1.45 metres horizontally, while ceiling-mounted configurations exploit further this generous working envelope. There is the possibility of suspending an extra load on axis 3 if required.

Speed and accuracy are combined in the SMART S4. It rotates around its vertical axis at 160deg/s; forearm and wrist rotation are both 290deg/s. Repeatability of positioning within the working envelope is ± 0.1mm. AC drive motors are used to minimise servicing by eliminating the need for brush replacement.

Dynamic motion control optimises performance and cycle times. The powerful C3G 901 control features open VME bus architecture designed for management of complex cells. Up to 16 axes may be controlled with dedicated hardware.
