Do your hydrocarbons past the test?

Article Type: New products From: Industrial Lubrication and Tribology, Volume 61, Issue 4

Testing the permeability of products, materials, tanks, pipes and equipment that are used with petrol, oil or other hydrocarbons has become both mandatory and increasingly strict across most of the globe.

Conventional tests are slow (taking days, weeks or even months) and are not always either accurate or consistent. To overcome this, Versaperm has introduced an advanced and sensitive new meter that can quickly and accurately test hydrocarbon permeability for a wide range of products and materials – from plastic petrol cans and tanks to aircraft components and from flat material samples to complex equipment and seals (Figure 1).

The Versaperm equipment meter is simple to use, requiring – at most – minimal training, yet it boosts both accuracy and dramatically reduces the time needed to make the measurement. Sometimes results can be produced in as little as 30 min.

The meter determines the amount of hydrocarbon that either seeps out of a container or diffuses through the materials under test. These results are required both for safety and to meet the latest environmental standards.

Versaperm’s new meter can optionally be configured to measure permeability for a variety of other gasses including Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Helium and water vapour. The equipment is highly automated, computerised and produces results that can be accurate to within a few part per million for some gasses.

Versaperm also offers a laboratory testing service for companies that test too few samples to make the purchase of equipment viable.
