Synthetic lubricants – the Fuchs energy efficient solution

When companies look to reduce energy costs, few will look at savings on offer from using synthetic lubricants.

Fuchs Lubricants (UK) PLC, the world's largest independent lubricant manufacturer, is looking to change that with the publication of “Energy Saving Lubricants for Process Industries”; an invaluable selection guide that can offer manufacturers tangible cost savings.

Studies have proven that the effective selection of synthetic “energy efficient” lubricants, such as those based on polyalphaolefin (PAO), polyalkylene glycol (PAG) and esters (POE), can help to reduce the power consumption of any plant and subsequently cut energy costs. Lubricants are designed to reduce friction but synthetic lubricants reduce friction better than traditional mineral-based oils, resulting in less energy/power required to drive machinery.

Included in the handbook is the recently developed Renolin Unisyn Ol range. High performance compressor oils, carefully formulated with a unique blend of synthetic PAO base oils and additives to make long, interruption- free operation possible.

Compared to mineral oils, the Renolin Unisyn Ol range foams less, offers better demulsification and has superior air release properties. The oils display excellent viscosity temperature behaviour, ensuring that an optimal lubricating film is always formed, even at high loads and after long periods of use, and their outstanding oxidation resistance properties prevents the formation of ageing and corrosive by- products.

They also contain anti-wear and extreme pressure additives that provide exceptional corrosion protection, to minimize bearing and rotor wear and significantly increase the operational reliability of the compressor. Recent tests have recorded a service life of over 7,500h in screw compressors, with the use of Renolin Unisyn Ol fluids.

Trails of Fuchs synthetic compressor lubricants, on a single 100HP rotary compressor, operating on full load over three shifts, resulted in savings of over £1,000 per year for one compressor.

When it comes to achieving peak performance and significant cost savings, the benefits of using Fuchs synthetic lubricants are clear; reduced deposits and cleaner machinery, enhanced equipment life from advanced corrosion protection and longer oil life from high temperature stability.
