PORBASE aims to develop interlibrary loan service

Keywords Interlending, Libraries, Information resources management, Cataloguing

The National Bibliographic Database, PORBASE, is the on-line union catalogue of the Portuguese libraries. It is run by the Biblioteca Nacional and has as its main objectives both the automation of the National Library's General Catalogue and the automation of the union catalogue of the Portuguese libraries.

It is hoped PORBASE will take advantage of the available resources within the Portuguese library community and help improve the service to the end user. A big part of this improvement will be the identification and circulation of the bibliographic information resources available within Portugal and the development of the interlibrary loan service.

PORBASE is open to any Portuguese libraries which would like to add their collections to the on-line catalogue and make them available to a greater number of potential users.

At present 125 libraries, of all sorts and sizes, and the National Library have the bibliographic details of their collections available on this database.
