A new vision

Article Type: News From: International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management, Volume 59, Issue 7

Singapore’s Labour movement chief says with the current push for a cheaper, better and faster economy, there is a need for both employers and employees to embrace the productivity drive and remove bottlenecks. He goes on to add that it is important to track the progress of the “cheaper, better and faster” initiative so that companies and unions keep moving up the improvement ladder.

CIBA Vision Asian Manufacturing and Logistics is one company which has done just that.

It is a global leader in the research, development and manufacturing of contact lenses and lens care products and has invested some S$180 million over the past five years, employing 320 people.

Over the years, it has reduced its dependency on foreign workers, promoted local talent, and moved from a labour-intensive workforce to a technical-based one.

“We spend a lot of time developing training for our people. But equipping them is only the first part. The other part is to empower them to do the job, trusting them to make sure they are able to perform the training that we give them,” said Mark Chua, General Manager of CIBA VISION Manufacturing.

The company has ten production lines – nine were developed in Germany and one in Singapore.

CIBA VISION also shares its productivity gains with its staff. It has an incentive scheme tied to bonus payouts where its associates are rewarded when they meet targets set out in the area of productivity and costs savings.
