Putting football in the service of education
The European Commission and football’s international governing body, Fifa, are to launch development projects combining football and education in schools in Africa. “The aim of this initiative is to put the enormous popularity and potential of football across the world – and in Africa in particular – at the service of education, bringing communities together, giving pride back to those who have lost it,” said a European Commission spokesman. “Far from being a gimmick, football is an important vector for development.”
The subsidised programmes combining football and education will be financed by the Fifa development fund and by the European Development Fund for countries in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific.
