With 82 of the 297 UK proposals for funding under the EU Leonardo training programme selected for funding in 1998, UK applicants achieved a success rate of 28 per cent. This compares with an average of 22 per cent across all participating countries.

The evaluators again reported an increase in the quality of proposals, although slightly fewer were funded than in previous years because of the smaller budget available for new projects.

The 82 projects are spread across all parts of the UK. There was a large increase in the number based in Yorkshire and Humberside, and more in Scotland and Wales. There was also an increase in the number of projects led by training and enterprise councils and by private and public-sector employers. Several projects were led by sectoral bodies such as national training organizations, and many were led by further education colleges and universities.

There were 12 placement programmes for university students and recent graduates, providing more than 650 people with work experience abroad.

Meanwhile, the Department for Education and Employment has published a leaflet, Leonardo da Vinci and Industry-Higher Education Links, which explains how the programme supports initiatives in Britain which promote collaboration between higher education and industry.
