Book review editorial

I would like to introduce the book review section of Equal Opportunities International (EOI) and invite authors to recommend their books for review and for colleagues to propose reviews of books/authors which they believe are of interest to our readership.

EOI publishes reviews of academic and professional books relevant to the field of equal opportunities, equality, and diversity for a primarily academic audience. In accordance with the overall ethos of the journal as presented in the main editorial, this field is broadly interpreted. Reviews which highlight new and noteworthy books should be approximately 1,000 words. In addition, longer reviews (1,500-2,000 words) which offer a critical assessment of the contribution of a particular author to the field will also be considered. In exceptional circumstances, if the work is seen as particularly noteworthy, we will review books more than 2 years old. I hope that this section of the journal will keep our readers up-to-date with key developments in the literature and identify scholars who have substantially contributed to advancing knowledge in this area.

In this issue, Ahu Tatlı reviews the Handbook of Workplace Diversity edited by Alison M. Konrad, Pushkala Prasad, and Judith K. Pringle. In the review she highlights the contribution of this comprehensive text to the development and expansion of workplace diversity. This review should provide a blueprint for future reviews as it discusses the various contributions made by this work in some details while evaluating the usefulness of the text for academics and practitioners.

Content

The review should address the following questions: What is this book about? Who should read it? What will they learn?

It is important to summarise the book's main arguments and conclusions. It is not necessary to provide a chapter-by-chapter description of its structure, but rather capture the themes of the book as a whole and why it will be useful and/or interesting.

A longer review (1,500-2,000 words) should critically review the contribution of an author to the area of equal opportunities, equality, and diversity through their collected works. Such longer reviews will assume that the author in question has contributed significantly to the development of work in this area and the review should serve as an overview for interested readers.

Try to come up with an appropriate title for your review, but please know that it may be changed in the editing process. Review authors will be consulted (and approval sought) regarding any proposed changes to their submission, including the title.

Presentation Put the book information at the top of the review, in the following format: Title, Author, Publisher, City, Year. Provide a one-sentence biography at the end of your review which should include your name and institutional affiliation. Please provide your full name and mailing address as well as the word count of your review.

Process

Please send your review to Book Review Editor, Finola Kerrigan, at Finola.Kerrigan@kcl.ac.uk within 8 weeks of receiving the book. If you are unable to read and review the book within this time, please let us know so that we can pass it on to another reviewer.

We will decide whether to publish your review according to how interesting we think the topic and review will be to our readers. Please be aware that reviews may be edited for length, style, and clarity. We have limited space and we cannot print every review we receive (it helps greatly to stick to the agreed length).

Authors: Please instruct your publisher to forward your book to me at the Department of Management, Franklin Wilkins Building, King's College London, SE1 9NH, UK. You may suggest an appropriate reviewer at this time.

Reviewers: Please contact me if you would like to write a book review for an upcoming edition.
