Abstract

It is probably a fair generalisation that the majority of companies, at any level in a distribution channel, do not think of themselves as being part of a wider system. They will accept that they purchase from other firms and that they sell their output to other firms or final customers, but rarely are these relationships based on a careful evaluation of alternative market channel strategies. In other words a company will tend to be a part of a distributive structure that has acquired the form it has through evolution rather than through planned development.
