Abstract

The period after the second world war was one of considerable hardship and widespread poverty in Austria; a time when many adolescents in technical colleges were found to be encountering learning problems and developmental difficulties, because of their deprived war‐time childhoods. During this period, in Vienna, a group of imaginative and far‐sighted people came together, prepared to dedicate their time and knowledge to sorting out, as far as possible, the problems of this large group of adolescents. The adolescent counselling services which arose from their efforts were the brainchild of Dr Ilse Scholer.
