Abstract

We know now that Enoch Powell's school classroom with only one white child in it is as much a myth as his street with only one little old white lady and the hospital with only one doctor and he an immigrant speaking no English. And it is tempting to say that with the present strict control of immigration the problem of educating the children of immigrants is a limited and transient one. The temptation must be resisted, though the difficulties are different from those most people imagine.
